Emmanuel Dror Farjoun (Einstein Institute of Mathematics, Jerusalem): Standard constructions as terminal monads
Abstract
The talk will discuss how several well-known constructions ---such as Bousfield Kan completion and the inverse limit of the Taylor tower for functors --- can be characterized by a universal property as terminal Monads in the relevant category of functors. This allows for their possible extension to more well-behaved functors. Some of the basic properties can be shown to hold for more general terminal monads associated with any monad or a tower thereof. This is closely related to the notion of "double dual" and reconstruction of a space from its cohomology algebra a-la Mandel. Joint work with Sergei Ivanov.
