Tyler Lawson (University of Minnesota / MPIM): Adjoining roots in algebra and topology
Abstract
In this talk we will begin by discussing the following problem: given an element x in the homotopy groups of a structured ring spectrum E, when can we build an extension ring that adjoins an n'th root of x? In particular, we will give a constructive method that rephrases this in terms of the unit spectrum of E. We will then explain how this leads to further connections to the Picard and Brauer spectra of E.
