ANDY BAKER (Glasgow): BP: close encounters of the E-infinity kind (8 May 2012)
Abstract
For each prime p, I'll describe a construction (modelled on an old idea of Priddy) of an E-infinity ring spectrum R that seems tantalisingly close to the Brown-Peterson spectrum BP. Indeed, if BP admits an E-infinity structure then these E-infinity ring spectra are weakly equivalent. The techniques used may be of wider interest and along the way I'll give some very classical looking formulae in a new guise.
