Leopold Zoller (Universität zu Köln): On certain rank conjectures in topology and algebra

Abstract

Several decades ago Steve Halperin conjectured that the total Betti number of a suitably nice compact space with a free torus action is bounded from below by the total Betti number of the acting torus. We will discuss the state of the conjecture and possible ways to attack it. In particular, we will focus on connections to the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud-Horrocks conjecture in commutative algebra.
