Content

Finite group schemes are to schemes what finite groups are to sets. As such, they appear in algebraic geometry whenever one studies automorphisms, for example,

In this lecture course, we will introduce and study the category of finite group schemes over a field. We will give precise descriptions of the following important subcategories of the category of finite group schemes:

Even though the category of finite group schemes over a field is not abelian, kernels, images, and normal subgroup objects do exist, making it possible to talk about extensions and exact sequences of finite group schemes. We will use this to study properties of general finite group schemes by breaking them into simple(r) pieces contained in the three categories above.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry (e.g. from Algebra I and Algebraic Geometry I)
