First Lecture: Tuesday 10.10.2017.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic notions from group theory and from algebraic geometry is necessary.

Content of the course

This course will cover the basic theory of linear algebraic groups. The focus will lie on groups over fields. One of the final goals will be the classification of connected reductive groups over algebraically closed fields

Literature

  • A. Borel: Linear algebraic groups, GTM 126, 2nd edition, Springer 1991.
  • T. Springer: Linear algebraic groups, 2nd edition, Birkhäuser, 1998, reprinted 2008.
  • D. Humphreys: Linear algebraic groups, GTM 21, Springer, 1981.

A further quite useful source could be the following lecture notes (written by S. Lichtenstein) of a course given by Brian Conrad in Stanford.

Exercise sessions

There will be no exercise sessions for this lecture.
