General information

20+ years of categorification

The year 2016 is (roughly) the 22th year after Crane and Frenkel introduced the notion of “categorification” in their attempt to extend the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev $2+1$-dimensional TQFT construction to the four-dimensional world.

Since then categorification has grown into a field on its own with several different aspects to it; some more combinatorial in nature, some algebraical or topological.

To understand all different aspects of it is a far-fetch goal, but to understand categorification at least partially from different viewpoints (and their possible/existing applications) is the main purpose of this workshop and we hope that this will turn out to be useful and interesting for all the participants.

Aim and scope of the workshop

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested in “categorical representation theory” and their applications, as well as students or researchers from related fields who want to learn about the “Why and how?” of categorification.

Structure of the lectures

The workshop consists of two parts. In the first three days there will be twelve lectures in total by the four main speakers. All of them will give introductory talks on different aspects of categorification, covering (in some details) topics as: Then (in the last two days) there will be eight additional lectures by the other speakers on different aspects of the modern developments within the field.
Each talk (main lectures and the additional talks) is a 60 minutes talk (plus time for questions), and will be held in the Lipschitz-Saal in the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn.

Registration (The registration is closed!)

If you are interested in participating: send an email to Daniel Tubbenhauer email. Please place [Workshop] in the subject line of your email, and please include your name and affiliation.

Local Information

Venue

The lectures will take place in the Lipschitz-Saal which is in the first floor of the Mathematical Institute of the University of Bonn. Here is the address:

Lipschitz-Saal
Mathematical Institute
Endenicher Allee 60
D-53115 Bonn

Here is how you can find the Institute (click to enlarge):

Bus stop: the bus stop Kaufmannstraße is located right in front of the Mathematik-Zentrum, Endenicher Allee 60. Lines 604, 605, 606, 607 (from and to the main train station Bonn Hbf), line 631 and night bus line N2 (after midnight) stop here.

WiFi

There is eduroam available which works in the whole institute. If you do not have eduroam, then it is also possible to get a guest account.

Accommodation

We will take care of booking a hotel room for all invited speakers. All other participants are asked to make their own hotel reservation.
Here are some hotels close to the institute:
All of these are in a medium price range (50-75 Euros per night). There are also cheaper options.

How to get to Bonn via airplane

Nearest airport: Cologne Bonn Airport
Airports which are also close by (and easy to reach via train): Flughafen Düsseldorf or Frankfurt Airport
There is a bus (SB60) going directly from the airport to Bonn Hbf (train station) every 30 min.

How to get to Bonn via train

Nearest train station: Bonn Hauptbahnhof (Hbf)
The page of the German railway company can be found here (you can easily buy tickets online)

Support

There is a very limited amount for financial support. (Update: Sadly, there is no further funding available anymore.) Please do not hesitate to write an email if you want to apply for it.

Holiday

Note that May the 16th is a public holiday in Germany and the university as well as most shops will be closed. The workshop will still take place.
